Marvel took to San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) at the weekend to reveal a bunch of new content for fans. For the first time ever, Marvel Studios had a panel dedicated solely to animation, as they are taking it up a notch.
The studios took to Hall H to announce loads of exciting things that will be sure to keep fans happy for a while. Here is everything they announced on Friday, July 22 at their animation panel.
I Am Groot
Marvel announced ‘I Am Groot’, a series of five original short episodes streaming exclusively on Disney+. The episodes will see baby Groot front and centre, as he grows up and causes mischief. Vin Diesel is returning to voice the beloved baby tree, with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum and James Gunn producing.
A surprise screening of one of the shorts ‘Groot Takes A Bath’ was shown at SDCC, and went down a treat with fans. All five shorts will be available to stream on August 10.
Marvel Zombies
In What If…? Season 1 episode 5, we see half of the Avengers turn into zombies. ‘Marvel Zombies’ will follow on from this idea, and reimagine the MCU as it gets taken over in a zombie apocalypse. The series will be directed by Bryan Andrews and will premiere on Disney+ in 2024.

Characters confirmed to appear in the series are Captain Marvel, Ghost, Scarlet Witch, Abomination, Hawkeye, Okoye, Kate Bishop, Yelena Belova, Captain America, Shang Chi, Ms. Marvel, and Jimmy Woo.
X-Men 97
The crowd at SDCC cheered as ‘X-Men 97’ was finally confirmed. The series will feature the original theme song, and will follow the stories of fan favourites such as Wolverine, Jean Grey, Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Rogue and more.
The series is still in early production, and is expected to stream on Disney+ in Autumn 2023.
Spider-Man Freshman Year
There have been plenty of questions about ‘Spider-Man Freshman Year’ ever since it was first announced. Marvel announced that the series will follow Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man. The series will see him befriend Harry Osborn, Amadeus Cho, and Nico Minuro. He will also fight villains such as Doc Oc, Scorpion and Rhino. For sidekicks, Doctor Strange will be helping him out. Daredevil will also be returning, with Charlie Cox reprising his role.
Creators of the show gave those at SDCC a sneak preview of the show. Fans got an exclusive look at Peter’s homemade suit, the design of the characters and Daredevil and the villain’s looks.
The series will premiere in 2024 on Disney+, with a second season already on its way.
What If…? Season 2
During the panel for Emmy nominated ‘What If…?’, fans got to watch an episode from the highly anticipated season two. The show takes a twist on the MCU, by showing what could have happened in certain events, but in other multiverses.

According to Discussing Film, season two is set to include an episode with Odin vs The Mandarin, Captain Carter meeting the Winter Soldier, Tony Stark on the planet Sakaar with Valkyrie and Hulk, and an episode with Hela. Season two of the series lands on Disney+ in early 2023, with a third season already on the cards.
